How to Create a SMaHT Data Portal Account
For Non-SMaHT Network Members: Self Registration
Overview
For non-SMaHT Network members, you can create a data portal account through self-registration. Registering yourself at the SMaHT Data Portal will allow you to log into the portal to explore and download open-access data generated from the SMaHT Network.
NOTE: Due to the nature of our donor consent agreement, raw data and other data/metadata that might be considered as self-identifying information are protected under the dbGaP access. To learn about what are open- vs protected-access data from the SMaHT Network, as well as the instructions on how to obtain access to the protected data, please see our documentation here.
Instructions
Step 1: Click the Login / Register Button to Start

On the SMaHT Data Portal homepage, click the blue Login / Register button, which will connect you to the Google-based authentication interface (known as \u201cOAuth\u201d).
Step 2: Connecting via Google's \u201cOAuth\u201d authentication system

Now it is time to connect to the portal. The SMaHT Data Portal uses the OAuth authentication system, which will allow you to login using a Google account linked to your personal or institutional email address.
Please note that if you think that you may potentially apply to obtain protected-access data (under dbGaP), we strongly encourage you to use your Google account linked to your institutional e-mail address, or the e-mail address that you plan to use when you apply for dbGaP access.

Step 3: Registering yourself as a non-SMaHT Network member

If you are not a SMaHT Network member, choose \u201cNo, I am not a member of the SMaHT Network\u201d to proceed to the rest of the self-registration steps.
NOTE for SMaHT Network members: If you are a new member, instead of choosing \u201cNo\u201d, please choose \u201cYes\u201d and follow the instructions for creating a network member account here.
Step 4: Complete the Self-Registration Form

Once you have reached this form, please double-check that you created a Google account with the email address shown in \u201cPrimary email\u201d. Then, enter your first and last name and the name of your primary or affiliated institution. Finally, click \"Sign Up\" and you will have created a SMaHT Data Portal account!
After you have created the SMaHT Data Portal account, the next time when you log in you will be directed straight to our OAuth authentication system with Google to log in. We hope you enjoy using the SMaHT Data Portal!
For SMaHT Network Members: Membership Verification & Account Creation
Note
SMaHT Network members have early access to the data generated by the SMaHT Network. Before creating the SMaHT Data Portal account, a Network member must be verified by the SMaHT Organization Center (OC) at Washington University at St. Louis.
Instructions
Step 1: Network membership needs to be verified by SMaHT OC
SMaHT Network membership is verified by the Organization Center (OC). If you are a new Network member or an associate Network member, please email the OC at smahtsupport@gowustl.onmicrosoft.com to be verified before contacting DAC about creating the portal access. When contacting OC, the new Network members should cc their PIs and provide their institutional email address. Upon the Network membership verification, the institutional e-mail addresses added to the SMaHT Network Directory will be used to log into the SMaHT Data Portal (see Step 2).
Step 2: Contact SMaHT DAC to set up your portal account
Please email the SMaHT Data Analysis Center (DAC) at smhelp@hms-dbmi.atlassian.net to have a portal account created as a Network member. Network members have early access to the SMaHT data, and their accounts have different privileges than those who self-register at the portal.
- When you contact DAC, provide your full name and institutional email address in the SMaHT Network Directory (very important!).
- Also, indicate the name of your PI and institution and your membership verification with the OC.
We will notify you once your account is created. In the meantime, please complete Step 3.
Step 3: Create a Google Account using Your Institutional Email Address
The DAC uses the OAuth authentication system which allows you to login using a Google account. Please create a Google Account that must be linked to your institutional email address in the SMaHT Network Directory (DO NOT use your Gmail or other personal e-mail address!).

You will create and USE A GOOGLE ACCOUNT, NOT A GMAIL ACCOUNT. Learn more about setting up Google Accounts here.

To create the Google Account linked to your institutional email (not your Gmail!), you can set it up by visiting the Google account creation page with the non-Gmail option. Register this account with your institutional email address.
Step 4: Sign In with Your Google Account linked to your institutional e-mail address
Once your account request to DAC is processed (Step 2), you will be able to log into the SMaHT portal via the \u201cSign in with Google\u201d option and your Google account.
If you are already logged into this account elsewhere on your computer, you may be able to simply select the account on the \u201cChoose an account\u201d pop-up. Otherwise, you will need to sign in with your institutional email and Google account password.
FAQ and Troubleshooting
I already have a Google account set up with my institutional email address used for other data portals (e.g. 4DN). Can I sign into the SMaHT Portal using that Google account?
Yes, as long as the institutional email you provided to SMaHT OC and DAC is the primary email address on the account, this should work without any issues.
I tried to create a Google account, but it said \u201cThat username is taken. Try another.\u201d What should I do?
Looks like your institutional email is already used as the primary email on a different Google Account. You should be able to recover the account by going to the Google Accounts password change page. There, enter your institutional email, and Google will send a recovery email to the email address on file.
I tried to log in with my Google account, but the portal says: \u201cAccount Unauthorized: An account associated with the email address does not exist in the system.\u201d What should I do?
This means that SMaHT DAC hasn't finished setting up your account. If you have not requested access yet, please return to Step 2 above. You can also click the \u201cHelp Desk\u201d button on the top right corner of the SMaHT data portal homepage (https://data.smaht.org) or the \u201cRequest Access\u201d button in the \u201cAccount Unauthorized\u201d popup to start an email request to DAC in your computer's default email client.|
I tried to log in with my Google account, but the portal says: \u201cSomething went wrong.\u201d What should I do?
This sounds like a technical error on our end. Please submit a bug report to smhelp@hms-dbmi.atlassian.net and include information about the operating system and web browser you are using. Also include the email address that you used to sign in.
